Quick Tablecloth Size Rule

Measure your table first, then choose how far you want the tablecloth to hang down on each side. That hanging amount is called the tablecloth drop.

  • Casual drop: 6 to 8 inches for everyday meals.
  • Standard drop: 8 to 12 inches for most dining tables.
  • Formal drop: 12 to 15 inches or more for holidays, weddings, and events.

How To Measure

Measure The Table Top, Then Choose Your Drop.

For rectangular, square, oval, and banquet tables, measure the table length and width. For round tables, measure straight across the center to get the diameter.

The tablecloth drop is how far the cloth hangs down from the edge of the table. A shorter drop feels casual, while a longer drop feels more formal.

  • Measure the table without an old tablecloth on it.
  • Do not include chairs in the table measurement.
  • For round tables, measure the diameter across the center.
  • Add the drop to both sides of the table size.

Measuring Tip

If you are between sizes, it is usually better to size up slightly. A tablecloth that is a little longer often looks better than one that barely hangs over the table edge.

Avoid These

Common Tablecloth Size Mistakes

These are the tablecloth sizing mistakes that make a table look awkward, uneven, or unfinished.

!

Forgetting The Drop

The tablecloth should be larger than the tabletop so it hangs over the edges.

!

Measuring With A Cloth On

Measure the actual table surface, not an old tablecloth that may be the wrong size.

!

Ignoring Table Shape

Round, rectangular, square, oval, and banquet tables use different measurements.

!

Choosing Too Short

A tiny drop can make the tablecloth look like it barely fits. When unsure, size up.
