How To Measure For Curtains
Measure the window first, then decide where the curtain rod will go. Curtain size depends on both the window itself and how far above and beyond the window you want the curtains to hang.
Measure the full width of the window, including the frame if needed.
Measure from the top of the window to where you want the curtains to end.
Add extra width for fullness so the curtains do not look flat when closed.

Simple Rules
How To Choose Curtain Size Without Overthinking It
Good curtains should feel intentional. They should cover the window, frame the room nicely, and have enough fullness that they do not look skimpy when closed.
For Width
Start with the rod width, then multiply by 1.5 to 3 depending on how full you want the curtains to look.
For Length
Measure from where the rod will hang to where you want the curtains to stop: sill, apron, floor, or puddle.
For A Taller Look
Hang the rod several inches above the window and extend it beyond the window frame on both sides.
Common Questions
Curtain Size Calculator FAQs
How Wide Should Curtains Be?
A common rule is for the total curtain width to be about 2 times the rod width. For a fuller look, use 2.5 to 3 times the rod width.
Should Curtain Width Be Based On The Window Or The Rod?
Curtain width is usually based on the rod width, not just the window width. The rod often extends several inches beyond the window on each side.
How Long Should Curtains Be?
Curtains can end at the sill, below the sill, at the floor, or slightly puddle on the floor. Floor-length curtains are a common choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
How High Should I Hang A Curtain Rod?
Many curtain rods are placed about 4 to 12 inches above the window frame. Hanging the rod higher can make the window and room feel taller.
Do I Need Two Curtain Panels?
Many windows use two panels, one on each side. The calculator estimates total curtain width and a suggested width per panel if using two panels.
