Mulch Depth Guide
How Deep Should Mulch Be?
A light refresh may only need around 2 inches. A common new mulch layer is often around 3 inches. Deeper coverage may use around 4 inches, especially for larger landscape areas, but too much mulch can create problems.
Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks. Mulch piled against trunks can trap moisture and create pest or disease problems.
Common Mulch Depths
- 2 inches: Light refresh or existing beds
- 3 inches: Standard garden bed coverage
- 4 inches: Deeper coverage for some landscape areas
Formula
Mulch Calculation Formula
For Rectangular Beds
Area = Length × Width
Cubic Feet = Area × Depth In Inches ÷ 12
For Round Beds
Area = 3.14 × Radius × Radius
Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
For Bag Estimates
Bags Needed = Cubic Feet ÷ Bag Size
Round up to the next whole bag so you do not run short.
